Yesterday, Monday, was yet another holiday, and another day off from school.
Here is a quick breakdown of the holidays since I moved here.
April 10- Good Friday
April 12- Easter Sunday
April 13- Easter Monday
(I had Easter break for two weeks)
May 1- Labor Day
May 21- Ascention Day (was Thursday so Fri. off too)
June 1- Pentecost Monday
June 11 (next week)- Corpus Cristi (also a Thursday, so schools are still closed on Friday)
That is six holidays, and a total of 16 days off from school(schools are typically closed for two weeks for Easter Break), all within a two-month time frame!
Not only are the banks closed on holidays, but so are schools, grocery stores, other stores and restaurants, and public transportation runs on a less frequent schedule. The stores before a long weekend holiday are like stores in the south when there is a threat of a snowstorm!
Yesterday's holiday was Pfingstmontag, or Pentecost Monday. The last holiday was called Himmelsfahrt (Ascention Day), but my teacher told us it is sometimes referred to as Farrahdfarht (to ride a bicycle) because so many people go out on their bicycles over that holiday weekend. Though people may not necessarily celebrate the religious significance of these holidays.
The next holiday for this region is not until October 3, which is a the nationally celebrated Reunification Day. But that's okay, I don't have daily classes again until late August anyway. ;)
