I was invited to spend the evening with some friends in Lich for dinner and a game as we waited for the New Year to arrive. I knew many people set off fireworks in Germany on New Year's Eve, but having lived in States where fireworks were illegal, I was only expecting some ground fireworks or sparklers. It was so much better! We went into the backyard, and the sky began to light up with fireworks from all over the little city of Lich! At midnight the church bells began ringing, and we enjoyed the 360 degree show of fireworks, with the sounds of the church bells intermingled with the bursting sounds of the fireworks. As we were heading back inside, one of my friends noted that it is better in Gießen and that in Frankfurt the entire sky is lit up. I could hardly imagine, and I have a pretty good imagination!
Right now snow is gently falling outside. I have no where to go today, as it is Sunday afternoon, church is over, and everything is closed. But I must go out and walk in it and enjoy this rare treat.
Happy New Year!
